Snyder’s DNRE appointment could be telling

By Ed Brayton | 11.15.10 | 7:10 am

Because of changes ordered by outgoing Gov. Jennifer Granholm, the head of the state’s primary environmental agency, now known as the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment, will be appointed directly by the governor rather than by a state commission. Howard Meyerson says this decision will tell a great deal about Rick Snyder:

Michigan Gov.-elect Rick Snyder has no small choice ahead in deciding who to install as the new director of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment. That selection will say much about the future of Michigan’s natural resources and environment…

Will Snyder choose a figurehead? I suspect he has more substance than that. His green rhetoric suggests sincerity.

I would hope that person would be steeped in conservation work and places a high value on environmental protection. Both are important to the state.

Snyder presented himself as a pro-environment Republican in the tradition of revered former Gov. William Milliken. This first decision will go a long way toward telling whether he was telling the truth. With a DNRE already stressed after years of steep budget cuts, giving the agency a weak leader would make things considerably worse.
