Skubick: Cox, Hoekstra attacks gave Snyder the job

By Ed Brayton | 11.10.10 | 12:33 pm

Tim Skubick, the dean of state political reporters in Michigan, addressed the Holland Area Chamber of Commerce yesterday and said that Rick Snyder won the governor’s mansion by default because Rep. Pete Hoekstra and Attorney General Mike Cox spent all their efforts going after one another instead of him. The Holland Sentinel reports:

Snyder won the governor’s seat, Skubick said, because Mike Cox’s negative ads brought down Pete Hoekstra.

“By all rights, we should be talking about governor-elect Pete Hoekstra,” Skubick said Tuesday morning at a chamber breakfast. “The guys in the primary were so busy beating up on each other, they let Snyder through virtually untouched.”

I think this is basically correct. Cox and Hoekstra waged a negative campaign against one another to secure the conservative vote, which allowed Snyder to appeal to moderates and independents and win just enough support from them to top the divided conservative vote for the other two candidates.
