Upton’s opponent for Energy chair on global warming

Rep. Fred Upton (R-St. Joseph) wants to be the chairman of the power House Energy and Commerce committee now that Republicans have taken control of the House. He has two main opponents: Rep. Joe Barton of Texas, who probably hurt his chances of getting the post when he apologized to BP for having to compensate the victims of the gulf oil spill during a hearing in Congress; and Rep. John Shimkus of Illinois, who has a fascinating reason for rejecting global warming.

During a hearing of that committee in March of 2009, Shimkus offered up several verses from the book of Genesis with God promising not to destroy the earth again after Noah’s flood, arguing that because the Bible is infallible, this must be true. Here’s the video:

    We’ve long believed that for some people religion is simply a shield behind which they hide their bigotry, misogyny, misanthropy, xenophobia, etc etc. Now it occurs to us that it’s also a shield for incompetence, inferiority and immaturity.
