In a post election interview with the Jackson Citizen Patriot, Congressman-elect Tim Walberg said if President Barack Obama doesn’t follow the mandate of the voters, “he will shut government down.”
The comments were made in follow up interviews after the Republican from Tipton was elected to return to Washington to represent the 7th Congressional district. Walberg beat incumbent freshman Democrat Mark Schauer of Bedford Township in a rematch of the 2008 election. The race was one of the key races political watchers across the country kept their eyes on and featured outside political groups spending in the race on both sides.
A government shut down arose following the 1994 Republican mid-term sweep, because then-President Bill Clinton refused to budge on budget priorities.
Schauer won two of the seven counties that make up the district, and Walberg made inroads in some areas of the district that have traditionally been Democratic, such as the small portion of Washtenaw county that is in the district.
Walberg also held his own in Schauer’s home county of Calhoun. In 2008, Schauer held a 10,000 vote lead in the county; this year he held 1,650 vote lead in the county.
