Voter turnout lower than expected

By Eartha Jane Melzer | 11.03.10 | 2:34 pm

Just 45 percent of Michigan’s registered voters cast votes in yesterday’s election according to Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land.

Land had earlier predicted that 52 percent or 3.8 million of Michigan’s 7.28 million registered voters would go to the polls.

Turnout varied widely in the states three most populous counties. In heavily Democratic Wayne County had 39 percent voted, in Oakland County 52 percent voted and in Macomb County 45 percent voted.

This year’s voter turnout is in line with past gubernatorial elections, Land said in a post-election bulletin — in 2002, 47.3 percent of the registered voters cast ballots.

A list of turnout by county is available on the Department of State website.

The final vote count in yesterdays Republican landslide is unofficial until certified by the State Board of Canvassers which must meet by Nov. 22.
