Republican Dan Benishek, a political newcomer with Tea Party connections, has won the race for Congress in the 31 county northern Michigan district that has been represented by Democrat Bart Stupak for 18 years.
“Voters are fed up with government but not for the reasons Dan Benishek and his supporters want you to think,” Democrat Gary McDowell said in a concession speech delivered around 10pm in Sault St. Marie. “People are fed up because elected officials have quit working together; they have quit even trying to find common ground.”
The Detroit Free Press reports that with 60% of the vote in, Benishek led McDowell 52%-41%. Independent candidate Glenn Wilson had just 4% of the vote.
“There are serious challenges facing Northern Michigan, but I am confident we can overcome them, as we always have—with a renewed sense of patriotism and hope for the future,” Benishek said in his victory statement. “I look forward to being part of the solution in Washington, guided by my ‘4R’s Pledge’ — to read legislation before voting on it, reduce taxes and the size of government, repeal ObamaCare, and reform government to bring it back in line with the Constitution.”
