Health care reform could mean free birth control

By Ed Brayton | 11.02.10 | 7:13 am

A group of experts advising the government on health care reform will soon consider the question of whether birth control medication should be considered preventive medicine under the terms of the overhaul of our health care system passed earlier this year. The Associated Press reports on the arguments:

“There is clear and incontrovertible evidence that family planning saves lives and improves health,” said obstetrician-gynecologist Dr. David Grimes, an international family planning expert who teaches medicine at the University of North Carolina.

“Contraception rivals immunization in dollars saved for every dollar invested. Spacing out children allows for optimal pregnancies and optimal child rearing. Contraception is a prototype of preventive medicine.”

The primary opposition will inevitably come from the Catholic Church, which opposes all forms of artificial birth control.

With the ability of unwanted pregnancies to seriously affect the quality of life for those too young and inexperienced to be making such serious life decisions, it would be a very responsible move for the government to offer free contraception. The unfortunate, all to common outcome of not promoting contraception is that people will choose to have an abortion instead. While the church would very much like neither, there is a need to promote the lesser or two evils among even those who support the church. For those who do not adhere to such ideals, contraception is certainly the far less expensive choice.
