Macomb County Prosecutor Smith under fire for voicemail message

By Todd A. Heywood | 11.01.10 | 10:25 am

Macomb County Prosecutor Eric Smith is under fire for an obscenity-laced voicemail he left Saturday for a Republican candidate for the Macomb County Commission.

The call from Smith was prompted after Republican James Perna and the Macomb County Republican Party sent out a mailer saying the Smith family has relied on public sector employment. Perna is running against the prosecutor’s brother, Bob Smith. Bob is a Clinton Township Fire Commissioner. The Smith brothers’ father was the police chief in Macomb county.

That mailer sent Eric into a tizzy. You can listen to the unedited voicemail here, but be warned, it is highly profane. A transcript of the voicemail, with the obscenities removed, is here:

Jim, this is Eric Smith. It’s 20 to 12. I’m glad you’re a man of your word, you lying mother******. Fine you want to take shots at my brother, he’s running against you. That’s fine. I think it’s a weak move but you want to do that, go ahead. You throw in my mom and my dad, who’s been dead for ten years…you mother*******. I am going f****** bury you. I hope you don’t mind, because you just opened the door.

The Two Joes podcast, featuring political consultants Joe Munem and Joe DiSano, brought out the voicemail on their podcast. In their banter during the show, they acknowledge this situation could be worse than just a potty-mouth:

This is a devastating situation for Eric Smith. I think there are legal implications to this. I mean this is a sitting county prosecutor threatening to bury someone.

Eric apologized on Sunday, reports Detroit’s Fox 2 News.
