McDowell earns Dist. 1 newspaper endorsements

By Eartha Jane Melzer | 10.29.10 | 5:05 pm

Dist. 1 Congressional candidate Gary McDowell (D-Rudyard) has earned the endorsement of two of northern Michigan’s largest newspapers.

The Bay City Times compliments Republican nominee Dan Benishek for his “folksy appeal” and for doing his homework on campaign issues but says that McDowell — a former UPS driver, state representative and county commissioner — would be a voice of reason and an advocate for the district.

Unusual in this time of political backlash over federal spending, McDowell says he probably would have voted for the economic stimulus package and the auto industry bailouts. Two years ago, we were in a worldwide economic collapse, he says; doing nothing was not an option. He’s right.

Close to home, McDowell has his sights fixed upon federal money for a new Soo lock, maintenance money for the Mackinac Bridge and earmarks for crucial projects in small northern communities.

It’s the same big national picture, small town balance that Stupak used to serve the district so well for close to two decades. McDowell would carry on that tradition.

The Traverse City Record Eagle also endorsed the Democrat in Dist. 1.

This paper notes the mild mannered McDowell’s dislike of political rancor and his support for health care reform.

In what is shaping up to be one of the closest races in the history of Michigan’s 1st Congressional District, we recommend Democrat Gary McDowell.
