Poll: GOP candidates strong in statewide races

By Ed Brayton | 10.28.10 | 10:17 am

A new poll by the Glengariff Group for the Detroit News and WDIV shows a strong advantage for the Republican candidates in all of the major statewide races — governor, attorney general, secretary of state and the two supreme court seats.

The poll of 600 likely voters has Republican candidate Rick Snyder maintaining an 18-point lead over Democrat Virg Bernero, 53 to 35 percent. Snyder has maintained a lead of at least that much since the start of the general election in August and nothing Bernero has done has managed to cut into that lead much.

In the attorney general race, Republican Bill Schuette has a 12-point edge over his Democratic rival, David Leyton, 47-35 percent.

In the secretary of state race, Republican Ruth Johnson has a 10-point lead over Democrat Jocelyn Benson, 47-37 percent.

Republicans also lead both supreme court races. Incumbent Republican Robert Young has a huge lead over challenger Denise Langford Morris, 27-10 percent. And challenger Mary Beth Kelley is leading incumbent Democrat Alton Thomas Davis 31 to 15 percent. Supreme court races are technically non-partisan but the candidates are nominated by the parties.
