Democratic candidate for the state House district 99, Toni Sessoms has released a video responding to a robocall paid for by the Campaign for Michigan Families. In that advertisement, Gary Glenn, who heads up the American Family Association of Michigan, alleges that Sessoms, who is an out lesbian, has as her campaign manager a lesbian for ran for a state representative seat two years ago. Glenn also alleges that Sessoms deputy campaign manager is gay.
In the video Sessoms says the robocall was saying “nasty and vile things.”
In the video response, Sessoms introduces viewers to her campaign manager, Mary Barker. Sessoms’ questions both Mary and her husband John Barker about Mary’s sexuality. In addition, Sessoms’ asks Barker if she has ever run for office. Barker, of course, denies she is gay, has worked for Central Michigan University, or that she has run for political office in the past.
Sessoms’ deputy campaign manager resigned in May and Sessoms has not replaced him, she says.
As for Glenn’s allegation that Sessoms is independently wealthy, Sessoms looks directly into the camera and says: “I am not now and I have never been, independently wealthy. In fact I own a Ford Explorer that is a 1997 model with 214,000 miles on it.”
Glenn did not immediately respond to inquiries about the errors in his robocall.
