Democrats promote independent candidate in race to replace Stupak

The campaign of Dist. 1 Republican congressional candidate Dr. Dan Benishek is accusing state Democrats of trying to fool voters with a mailing intended to boost support for independent candidate Glenn Wilson.

The Detroit Free Press reports that Democrats are behind a recent mailing that touted Wilson’s anti-government positions.

A mailing last week to voters appeared to come from Wilson, a self-described tea party patriot, featuring a photo of the candidate in front of a silhouette of a man wearing a tri-cornered hat and holding a musket. Wilson, according to the text, “would drastically reduce the role of Washington … (and) has no government experience.”

In the anti-government precincts of northern Michigan that may sound pretty positive. But the flyer concluded with the admonition: “Glenn Wilson would be a costly mistake,” and it was paid for by the state Democratic Party. Republicans suspect the Dems are trying to dupe voters who might otherwise go for Benishek to back Wilson, allowing McDowell to eke out a victory.

Independent voters could be key to victory in this highly competitive, nationally-watched contest. A poll commissioned by the Detroit Free Press last week shows Benishek and Democrat Gary McDowell tied at 41% in the in the northern Lower Peninsula with 9% for Wilson and 9% undecided.

Wilson used his campaign website to thank the Michigan Democratic Party for informing voters about his stance on irresponsible government spending.

However, we have an idea for the Democratic Party. Instead of spending the speculated $30,000+ on this mailer hammering Glenn for his “dangerous plan to reduce Government spending“, why not spend your money on advocating for our Senior’s Social Security cost of living increases? Promoting Green Energy technology? Supporting candidates who want to bring our troops home? Sending it to a food bank even?”

Glenn wants to cut wasteful Government spending that benefits the lobbyists, big corporations and special interest groups in order to give our Seniors the raise they deserve. Michigan Democratic Party, do you not support this?
