I am writing today to announce the closure of the Michigan Messenger. After four years of operation in Michigan, the board of the American Independent News Network, has decided to shift publication of its news into a single site, The American Independent at Americanindependent.com. This is part of a shift in strategy, towards new forms [...]
An abstinence-only presentation provided to numerous school districts in Calhoun and Eaton Counties in October of this year provided false and misleading information to students about HIV, experts allege.
Two county registers of deeds filed a class action lawsuit Monday on behalf of Michigan’s 83 counties alleging that the Mortgage Electronic Registration Services owes millions of dollars in property title transfer taxes.
Despite evidence of the impact of mercury on children and public health, Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette last month joined with 24 other state attorneys general in filing a lawsuit to scuttle new EPA regulations that would reduce mercury emissions from power plants.
The Campaign for Michigan Families, a political group run by Gary Glenn of the American Family Association of Michigan, has started blanketing the 99th State House District with robocalls attacking Democratic candidate Toni Sessoms.
During the robocall, Glenn repeatedly uses the word “homosexual” 10 times in the one minute and thirty-six second robocall. Glenn and the Campaign for Michigan Families launched a similar robocall and radio attack program against Garnett Lewis in 2008. Lewis was running as an out lesbian.
Glenn voices the robocall and starts by introducing himself as the co-author of the Michigan’s Marriage Amendment. That’s the amendment to the Michigan Constitution that voters approved in 2004. It defines marriage as between one man and one woman. Michigan courts have ruled the Amendment bars the use of domestic partner benefits solely for same-sex partners, and instead requires public entities offer such benefits to both same-sex couples and opposite sex unmarried couples.
The Sessoms campaign has not responded to the robocall.
No need to do that. What needs to be done is simply confront him in the marketplace of ideas. He practically has nothing but the standard talking points. You know, gays are awful because they are gay, not because of their behavior or ideas, etc. Unfortunately, he rarely engages in dialogues in any form. Hides behind afamichigan.org and such “pro-family” organizations. Why do you think it was a robocall, he doesn’t want to even take that chance that someone would present opposing views.
