Democrats tap current Kalamazoo mayor to replace deceased Jones in 20th Senate District

By Todd A. Heywood | 10.20.10 | 12:00 pm

The unexpected death of State Rep. and former mayor of Kalamazoo Robert Jones has led Democrats to select current Kalamazoo Mayor Bobby Hopewell as his replacement on the ballot in the race for the 20th state Senate district.

Under Michigan law, a deceased person cannot appear on a ballot. That caused area Democrats to convene an emergency session of executive leaders in the district to appoint a replacement to face Republican state Rep. Tonya Schuitmaker. Hopewell was the only person nominated for the position and the 60 leaders at the meeting voted unanimously to nominate him to take over the slot.

In an interview with the Kalamazoo Gazette, Hopewell had this to say about his nomination:

“I want to make sure that Bob’s work continues,” Hopewell said. “I have a belief in what he stood for. … Someone had to step in and it seemed logical for me to do that.”

Hopewell has said he asked for, and received, the blessing of Jones widow. Now he faces a tough uphill battle for two weeks leading up to the November elections. He has to put together a campaign team, raise money and hit the streets meeting with voters and pushing for them to vote for him to be their next state Senator.
