Oral argument over in Asian carp suit

Attorneys for all of the Great Lakes states other than Indiana and Illinois participated in oral argument in federal court on Monday in a case seeking to force the hand of the federal government to close the locks that separate the Chicago Sanitary and Shipping Canal from Lake Michigan.

The states argue that the risk of allowing the Asian carp to infest the great lakes promises such economic and environmental destruction that it is worth the cost of closing the locks, while the city of Chicago and many businesses argue that the risk is low and the economic cost of closing the locks too high.
