Late Sunday, state and local election officials announced that absentee balloting in the race for the 20th state Senate seat would be suspended pending decisions on how to handle the unexpected death of the Democratic nominee, reports the Kalamazoo Gazette.
State Rep. and former Kalamazoo Mayor Robert Jones died unexpectedly Sunday at his home. No cause has been determined, but he has been battling esophageal cancer for over a year and half.
The sudden death has left state and local election officials scrambling to figure out what do with the Nov. 2 ballot. Michigan election law prohibits a deceased person from appearing on the ballot. That means Democrats need to name a replacement for Jones, which forces the election officials to reprint ballots.
As a result, absentee balloting has been suspended for at least Monday in the district while election officials huddle to find an answer for the dilemma.
Jones was undergoing chemotherapy to treat the cancer, even as he was vigorously campaigning to replace term limited state Sen. Tom George, a Republican. His opponent Tonya Schuitmaker, a Republican state representative from Lawton, has suspended her campaign activities and pulled her campaign advertising for the time being.
