Gov. Jennifer Granholm vetoed one bill and part of another that were part of the budget compromises for FY 2011, which began nearly two weeks ago on Oct. 1.
She vetoed completely a bill that would have allowed sales of liquor on Sunday mornings, saying that she supports the bill but it contained language that could open the state up to lawsuits. She encouraged the legislature to fix that language so she could sign the bill.
The second was a supplemental school funding bill, which she vetoed only in part, redlining Section 2 of the bill that governed how new federal funds would be distributed. She released a letter from the U.S. Department of Education that suggests that wording of the bill violated the standards of the federal legislation that authorized the funds.
As with the previous bill, Granholm hopes the legislature will fix the faulty language and indicated that she would then sign the bill.
