A new poll shows Democratic nominee for governor Virg Bernero is closing the gap between himself and GOP nominee Rick Snyder. For weeks polls have shown Snyder leading the race by 20 points. But a new poll shows Bernero has cut Snyder’s lead to just over 12.5 percent, reports the Detroit News.
The poll was conducted Thursday by the Metro Detroit consulting firms Baydoun Consulting and Foster McCollum White and Associates. It had a margin of error of 2.05 percent and surveyed voters who consistently voted in the 2006 gubernatorial and 2008 presidential races as well as the August primary, the polling groups said.
Broken down by party, 64.27 percent of Democrats in the survey favored Bernero, while 21.37 percent chose Snyder. For Republicans, 75.23 percent supported Snyder and about 15 percent were for Bernero.
Among independents, 56.91 percent named Snyder and 28.65 percent picked Bernero.
Interestingly, the poll was conducted before Sunday’s only debate between the two rivals. During that debate, Bernero accused Snyder of outsourcing jobs to China, including a claim one of his companies, Dycera, had done so as recently as this past July. Snyder denied the claims during the debate, but within an hour released a statement acknowledging the company had opened an office in China.
State Democrats released a new commercial attacking Snyder for what they call “outsourcing and lying.”
Democrats successfully played the outsourcing to China card in the 2006 race between Republican Dick DeVos and Democrat Jennifer Granholm. Granholm went on to win a second term.
