New poll shows Bernero closing gap with Snyder in Gov’s race

By Todd A. Heywood | 10.12.10 | 3:56 pm

A new poll shows Democratic nominee for governor Virg Bernero is closing the gap between himself and GOP nominee Rick Snyder. For weeks polls have shown Snyder leading the race by 20 points. But a new poll shows Bernero has cut Snyder’s lead to just over 12.5 percent, reports the Detroit News.

The poll was conducted Thursday by the Metro Detroit consulting firms Baydoun Consulting and Foster McCollum White and Associates. It had a margin of error of 2.05 percent and surveyed voters who consistently voted in the 2006 gubernatorial and 2008 presidential races as well as the August primary, the polling groups said.

Broken down by party, 64.27 percent of Democrats in the survey favored Bernero, while 21.37 percent chose Snyder. For Republicans, 75.23 percent supported Snyder and about 15 percent were for Bernero.

Among independents, 56.91 percent named Snyder and 28.65 percent picked Bernero.

Interestingly, the poll was conducted before Sunday’s only debate between the two rivals. During that debate, Bernero accused Snyder of outsourcing jobs to China, including a claim one of his companies, Dycera, had done so as recently as this past July. Snyder denied the claims during the debate, but within an hour released a statement acknowledging the company had opened an office in China.

State Democrats released a new commercial attacking Snyder for what they call “outsourcing and lying.”

Democrats successfully played the outsourcing to China card in the 2006 race between Republican Dick DeVos and Democrat Jennifer Granholm. Granholm went on to win a second term.

The costs of doing business in Michigan are way too high. In fact, because of an excessive tax and regulatory structure, the costs of doing business in Michigan are 3 to 4 percent higher than in the states with which we most often compete for jobs. Any surprise that Michigan is at the back of the pack in terms of economic growth? We should enact the Michigan Turnaround Plan, reduce the Michigan Business Tax and eliminate the personal property tax. That's exactly what our state needs to get our economy going. http://www.michiganturnaroundplan.com.

Michigan is on the ropes because for 8 years bush facilitated outsourcing of American manufacturing. He refused to act even in the face of WTO rulings stating that the US was within its rights to protect its markets from dumping of products by blatant violators of trade agreements.
The US Auto makers which were poorly managed to begin with faced foreign competition that received big subsidies from their governments.

Michigan had the most auto and related manufacturing of any state and it was the Auto industry demise, (caused by insane government trade policies that simply “gave away the farm”), and not the business tax that caused our jobs crisis.
Snyder is just another anything goes crony capitalist who will throw workers and families under the bus to pad the pockets of his rich pals.

Virg Bernero understands the need to reform Michigan's revenue structure in an even handed way that will not abandon the blossoming 21st century technology industries that are underway today. He knows that investment in education and incentives to attract skilled labor employers is absolutely vital to our future.
Snyder doesn't understand this or maybe he just doesn't care. He is just going to cut education and all other services to the bare bone and pass the spoils to low skill employers who will turn our state into a minimum wage trailer park.
