The Traverse City Commission voted unanimously on Monday to pass an ordinance forbidding discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity, becoming the 18th city in the lower peninsula to pass such a law. The Traverse City Record-Eagle reports:
The ordinance, among other things, bans employers from discriminating against or firing employees because of their sexual orientation. It also prohibits landlords and housing facilities from turning away renters based on their sexuality alone.
Religious organizations are exempt from the ordinance, as are residents who rent out rooms in their single-family homes.
State and federal law already prohibits discrimination on a number of other bases, including gender, race, religion and ethnicity. Opponents of the ordinance plan to file petitions for a referendum by voters to repeal the new law.
