By Staff Report | 11.16.11

I am writing today to announce the closure of the Michigan Messenger. After four years of operation in Michigan, the board of the American Independent News Network, has decided to shift publication of its news into a single site, The American Independent at Americanindependent.com. This is part of a shift in strategy, towards new forms [...]

Dunnings releases victim interview

By Ed Brayton | 10.04.10 | 5:28 pm

Ingham County Prosecutor Stuart Dunnings III has now released the full record that his office has in the alleged sexual assault by two MSU basketball players, including the full transcript of the interview with the victim carried out by the police. It’s all in a PDF file on the county website.

The victim interview begins on page 48, preceded by the full police report and the interview with one of the players that were previously released.

As noted previously, the Messenger had sent the interview with the player and the police report to a diverse group of experts — rape victim advocates, defense attorneys and former prosecutors — for their analysis of whether charges, or at least further investigation, were warranted.

Now that the victim’s interview is available, we have forwarded it to those experts so they can revise their statements if they feel the new information in that interview warrants such a revision and we will hold off on reporting the results of their analysis until they’ve had a chance to read the transcript.

She's not even a victim. There was no crime = No Victim.

    She is a false accuser.

    • cm9

Just because what she reported didn't meet the standards of what constitutes a crime, doesn't mean she is a false accuser. The accused didn't deny what she said happened. Although the accused are not guilty of a crime, it is quite a jump to suggest that they are innocent, and that they are the victims. If the accused did nothing wrong, they should not fear revealing their identities.

Also, unless you're going to redact all the names, I suggest taking the document down.

Way to leak out a name! I see that you are just as thorough in posting documents as you are in reporting. You run a real classy “blog” here. Why not leak out the accuser's name as well? That should be good for a few more hits.

      • http://twitter.com/Slicknickshady Nicholas Richardson

Are you talking about the witness name that wasnt blacked out?

  • ebrayton

We cannot take the document down because we did not put it up. It was released by Stuart Dunnings on the Ingham County website and given to all media outlets. Any failures of redaction are the fault of his office, as was the case with the police report and the first interview transcript. The Michigan Messenger has never revealed the identities of either the alleged victim or the alleged assailants.

You are a joke of a blog.

    • SoIsaid

So, of course, you've done the responsible thing by making the prosecutor's office aware of the mistake, and removed the link from your own page until such time as it is corrected or you receive acknowledgment that the county is aware of the error, right?

What? You haven't? I remain unsurprised.

You know, there's a reason almost every major news outlet hasn't jumped on this story yet. It starts with an I-. It ends with an -egirty. Think you can manage to fill in the rest?

    • cm9

Are failures to provide the “experts” with all the pertinent information before they were asked to proved their opinion your fault Ed Brayton? You did leak that they were basketball players, even though that was redacted from all the documents. Again, is that your responsibility? You provided information to obtain the identities of the accused – you cannot shift blame to Stuart Dunnings office for that.

Are you fools really to dense to discern when a document is hosted at the michiganmessenger.com domain and when it is at ingham.org? Ayup, I guess you are. Geniuses, one and all.

    • theskeptic4u

After all your ignorant comments the last week I find it comical you are calling anyone “geniuses”.

Happy Tuesday. Will the backpedaling continue today?
