Rep. McCotter, Catholic Doctrine and Children’s Health Care

By Ed Brayton | 11.14.07 | 10:41 pm

A group called Catholics United recently began running ads in the home districts of 13 U.S. Representatives who call themselves pro-life but voted against legislation reauthorizing the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP), which provides health insurance for children who lack it. The targeted group includes two Michigan Republicans, Thaddeus McCotter and Joseph Knollenberg. The ad said:

I’m the mother of three children, and I’m pro-life. I believe that protecting the lives our children must be our nation’s number one moral priority. That’s why I’m concerned that (Congressman X) says he’s pro-life, but for the second time in a month, he

Looney group As an actual Catholic, most people like me know this is a fringe group. They are first Democrats and liberals, then secondly (maybe) Catholics. They are trying to bring the Catholic vote back to the Democrats which they lost in 2004 and will again in 2008.

This is like the DNC religious outreach people who are for all practical purposes not religious people at all. People will see through this crap.

Thad McCotter and Joe Knollenberg are pro-life and vote that way.

Salve Regina I am aware of the Bishops Councils position.
The assertion that Knollenberg and McCotter are not pro life is political rhetoric.

If they criticized them for being opposed to the bill that is one thing. But to say they aren’t pro life is rhetoric and further proves that they are partisans.

    Viva Dick Cheney!

The argumentum ad labelum again You're using the same logical fallacy that McCotter did. Merely labeling the group liberal or Democratic does not defeat their position, nor does it place them on the fringe of the Catholic Church. Their position is, in fact, identical to the position taken by the US Conference of Catholic Bishops and is entirely in line with Catholic doctrine on social policy. You can disagree with them, of course, but you can't seriously argue that their position is not in line with the church's position. Labeling an argument is not synonymous with defeating the argument.

Keep in mind… that the same guy who is calling Catholic's United partisan is the same guy who takes his name from our Republican Vice President.
