Despite spending much of the last year and a half declaring that the stimulus package failed to create any jobs or boost the economy, the Michigan Republican congressional delegation signed a letter to the Department of Energy seeking a significant portion of those funds for the state on the grounds that they would boost the economy and create jobs.
The Wall Street Journal filed a FOIA request for all such letters sent by legislators to the DOE requesting stimulus funds for projects in their home states and districts.
Opposition to the Obama administration’s economic-stimulus package didn’t stop at least 24 congressional Republicans from lobbying the Department of Energy on behalf of companies and constituents who wanted stimulus contracts and grants from it.
Reps. Jo Bonner of Alabama, Dan Lungren of California, Doug Lamborn and Mike Coffman of Colorado, Lynn Westmoreland, Jack Kingston and Nathan Deal of Georgia, Jerry Moran of Kansas, Fred Upton, Vernon Ehlers, Thaddeus McCotter, Candice Miller and Pete Hoekstra of Michigan … wrote to Energy Secretary Steven Chu and top Energy Department officials asking them to consider particular recipients for stimulus dollars in 2009.
When asked on CNN in July whether such stimulus projects had created jobs, Hoekstra answered, “No, absolutely not. Since the passage of the economic stimulus bill our unemployment rate in Michigan has gone up. The number of jobs employed, the payroll in my hometown has gone down by 2,000 people. This stimulus bill has not helped my community or helped the state.”
This is hardly the first time Republicans have been caught asking for stimulus funds to create jobs in their districts while simultaneously claiming that the stimulus package hasn’t created any jobs, it’s just the first time the letters to this particular agency have been revealed. Other agencies have received similar letters in the past.
