Democrats question Snyder’s role in alleged discrimination at Gateway

By Todd A. Heywood | 09.22.10 | 10:53 am

Michigan Democrats are raising questions about GOP candidate Rick Snyder’s history at Gateway.

This time the questions are not about sending jobs to China, rather they are about claims of discrimination against women at Gateway while he was CEO, reports the Associate Press.

According to the report, in 1996 a Department of Labor review of Gateway hiring turned up 26 cases where qualified women were denied technician positions in the company. The review was a standard government audit because the company had a multi-million dollar contract with the company.

Gateway settled the complaint in 1998. While it did not admit wrong-doing, the company did hire the women and give them back pay.

Snyder is leading Democratic candidate for governor Virg Bernero by a wide margin. Bernero and the Democrats have been focused on claiming the progressive mantle from Snyder, who has been portrayed as moderate.

Democrats have focused on choice issues, noting that Snyder does not believe in abortion except in the cases of rape or incest or to protect the life of the mother. Bernero, on the other hand, supports a woman’s right to choose.

Snyder spokesman Bill Nowling dismissed the Gateway hiring issue as “resorting to the same old Lansing political tricks to scare voters.”
