Kent County officials warn of fake HIV test results

By Todd A. Heywood | 09.18.10 | 5:53 am

Kent County Health Department officials are warning residents that some one is impersonating health officials. Making matters worse, the impersonator is telling residents they have tested positive for HIV.

The Grand Rapids Press reports the county has received information about at least six such instances.

“All of the staff at the Health Department takes patient confidentially very seriously. Health Department staff would never call a client and provide their HIV status over the phone,” said Cathy Raevsky, Administrative Health Officer for the Health Department. “We have several safety checks in place to ensure that the correct HIV information is provided to our clients”

Health officials are asking people who receive the bogus diagnosis calls to check the time and date of the call. They are also asking residents to watch their caller IDs and to save any answering machine messages left by the impersonator. The information, Health officials say will assist in an ongoing police investigation.
