Michigan runs out of money for tourism advertising

By Eartha Jane Melzer | 09.17.10 | 3:15 pm

The state’s tourism office has ended its Pure Michigan advertising campaign for the year because it has run out of money.

State officials say that every dollar spent on tourism promotion brings in around $2.30 in state tax revenue, but a 39 percent cut in the Michigan Economic Development Corporation’s promotional budget has forced the office to abandon ads promoting color tours and other fall activities in Michigan.

The website continues to invite people to visit the state’s harvest festivals, farmers markets, vineyards, and hunting and fishing attractions.

According to MEDC visitors to the state spend $15.1 billion annually traveling in Michigan. These visits generate $850 million in state taxes and support 142,500 Michigan jobs.
