Police identify suspect in Quran burning in East Lansing

By Todd A. Heywood | 09.17.10 | 7:45 am

East Lansing Police say they have identified the man responsible for the desecration of a Quran at an East Lansing mosque.

When ELPD offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of a suspect, the man turned himself into authorities, reports the Lansing State Journal. The man lives in the Lansing area.

The individual recounted specific information about the incident which police had kept under wraps, and the man continues to cooperate with police, an ELPD spokesperson says. The person is not in custody and police expect to turn over their reports to Ingham County Prosecutor Stuart Dunnings III early next week.

Dunnings will determine if a crime was committed and whether or not enough evidence exists to prosecute that crime.

The situation started last week while the nation was fixated on the Florida pastor who was planning to host a Quran burning at his church. That event in Florida was canceled, but on Saturday night a Quran was burnt, allegedly defecated and urinated upon and left at the Islamic Center of East Lansing — which is both a mosque and a community center.

The Council for American Islamic Relations has called the incident a hate crime.
