Sec. of State candidates fighting over debates too

The two candidates for governor are not the only ones squabbling over whether and when to hold a debate prior to the November election. The two candidates for Secretary of State — Republican Ruth Johnson and Democrat Jocelyn Benson — are also fighting over debates.

Benson has been pushing Johnson to hold a debate but so far Johnson remains non-committal. Like Virg Bernero, she’s even taken to going to where her opponent is to put the pressure on her, showing up at Johnson’s Oakland County Clerk’s office on Thursday. According to a press release from the Benson campaign, Johnson was in a meeting and did not respond.

“The voters deserve to hear us debate the issues, so they can decide who is on their side,” said Benson. “I decided months ago before I even knew who my opponent was that I would debate. I’m stunned – what does she have to hide? Johnson just needs to say yes.”

With less than seven weeks to go before the election, time is running out.
