Though violent crime is down overall by 24 percent according to the most recent FBI Unified Crime Report, Saginaw, Michigan — for the seventh year in a row — has been ranked the most violent city with a population over 50,000. There were 2.3 violent crimes per 100 people during 2009.
Flint, Detroit and Pontiac also ranked within the top ten most violent cities nationwide.
The Saginaw News reports that city Police Chief Gerald H. Cliff is emphasizing the positive in the latest crime report.
“The number (of violent crimes) is the lowest as it has been in eight years,” he said. “I’m grateful that we’re going in the right direction.”
There were 440 fewer violent crimes reported in 2009 as during the prior year.
“And I’m confident that next year is going to be better than this year,” Cliff said.
