Man with alleged ties to militia movement arrested in Ingham County

By Todd A. Heywood | 09.15.10 | 9:45 am

A 48-year-old man from Brighton is sitting in the Ingham County jail after police found a loaded handgun in his car. The man, Richard Scott McLeod, was pulled over near Webberville, allegedly for speeding.

Ingham County Sheriff Gene Wrigglesworth says he was shaking and sweating profusely so the officer asked him to step out of the car, reports WLNS, the CBS affiliate in Lansing. At that point McLeod told the officer about the loaded hand gun.

On top of the hand gun, the officer found a bullet proof vest — which the Lansing State Journal refers to as a “military style” vest — as well as bomb making materials and instructions. The Journal also reports the man had Adolf Hitler quotes on bumper stickers in his car. There was also a picture of President Barack Obama. WLNS reports black powder, a first aid kit, a laser sight and other items were also found in the car.

WLNS quotes Sheriff Wrigglesworth as saying:

“The other items, individually are not of concern, collectively is what causes you concern. When you start finding black powder and paraphernalia that talks about making bombs and pictures, in conjunction with a picture of the president, that kind of thing causes concern.”

He allegedly told officers he was a member of the Michigan Militia, but the Southwest Michigan Volunteer Militia, which owns the website Michigan Militia, says he is not a part of their group. The Lansing Militia told WILX, the NBC affiliate, he was not affiliated with their group either.

The FBI is assisting in the investigation into McLeod, who was arraigned Tuesday on possession of body armor and carrying a concealed weapon. He is being held in the Ingham County jail on a $15,000 bond and will appear in court on Sept. 23 for a preliminary hearing.
