Michigan gets $318 million for teacher retention

By Ed Brayton | 09.14.10 | 9:39 am

The state aid bill passed last month is beginning to distribute funds, with the Department of Education announcing yesterday that Michigan will receive $318 million in funds during the current school year to prevent teacher layoffs at the local school level. The Detroit Free Press reports:

“These education dollars will help Michigan keep thousands of teachers in the classroom working with our students this school year,” Duncan said in a news release.

The $10-billion education fund will support education jobs in the 2010-11 school year and be distributed to states by a formula based on population figures, according to the release. States then can distribute their funding to school districts.

Good news for the state’s school districts, still reeling from last year’s massive cuts in state aid, and for the Michigan economy.
