Conyers begins prison term today

By Ed Brayton | 09.10.10 | 9:56 am

Monica Conyers — former Detroit City Council chairperson and the wife of longtime U.S. Congressman John Conyers — is set to begin a three-year prison term after turning herself in at 2 pm today. But the Detroit Free Press reports that it’s not exactly the Florence Supermax prison she’s going to:

But come 2 o’clock today, Monica Conyers’ fight to stay out of prison should be officially over when she begins her 37-month prison sentence at the Alderson Federal Prison Camp in West Virginia.

The facility, nicknamed Camp Cupcake, is nestled among the bucolic foothills of the Allegheny Mountains in West Virginia along the Greenbrier River. It looks like a college campus — and is called that by locals — and has housed celebrity convicts such as Martha Stewart.

Conyers has been trying to evade and delay the sentence by every means imaginable. After pleading guilty to bribery and corruption, she then tried to withdraw that guilty plea and was rejected by the federal court. She’s now appealing that ruling but is very unlikely to win.

She was supposed to report to prison in July but got two month delay to attend to a sick relative. A second attempt to delay the start of her term was denied by the court.
