Snyder up by almost 30 in new poll

In a poll by Mitchell Research & Communication, Republican gubernatorial candidate Rick Synder continues to outpace his opponent by a wide margin. The new poll puts Snyder ahead of Democratic candidate Virg Bernero, 53-26 percent. The survey was conducted Aug. 25-29, sampling 600 likely Michigan voters, with a +/- 4 percent margin of error.

Snyder has consistently led his general election opponent in the polls. TPM’s PollTracker now has Bernero trailing by an average of 20 percent, with Snyder’s lead trending upward. Those numbers may be more a result of the current Democratic government as it is voters’ response to Snyder’s candidacy. Current Gov. Jennifer Granholm receives terrible favorable ratings as the state has weathered the economic recession worse than the rest of the country. When her job performance was polled late in August, only 32 percent of people had a favorable opinion of the governor, compared to 63 percent who disapproved.

In a recent analysis of the gubernatorial race before this latest poll, FiveThirtyEight’s Nate Silver gave Snyder an 83 percent chance of reclaiming the governor’s seat for the GOP.
