Carpenters union to endorse Snyder

By Ed Brayton | 09.07.10 | 7:21 am

Labor unions have traditionally been one of the strongest and most consistent constituencies supporting the Democratic Party, but at least one state union is bucking that trend and supporting Republican gubernatorial candidate Rick Snyder rather than the Democratic candidate, Virg Bernero. The Detroit Free Press reports:

The announcement by the 18,000-member Michigan Regional Council of Carpenters and Millwrights is expected to come during an 11:30 a.m. news conference at union headquarters in Detroit, after the annual Labor Day parade.

“We feel in this race, Rick Snyder is the best candidate to fix Michigan, and that’s what’s in the best interest of our membership,” Secretary-Treasurer Mike Jackson said in a news release.

Bernero still has overwhelming support from the labor unions. Most observers believe he won the primary against House Speaker Andy Dillon largely because of union support, particularly the UAW and AFL-CIO, which spent $2 million on campaign ads on Bernero’s behalf.
