A childhood disease once thought to be exceedingly rare is making a big come back in Washtenaw county, the Ann Arbor News reports.
Pertussis, commonly called Whooping Cough for the noise if forces those infected to make during coughing episodes, is a preventable illness. There is a vaccine which had helped control the bacterial disease for decades. You can listen to what the coughing episodes with this infection sound like at this Utah Department of Health website.
But now Washtenaw County Health Department Officials say they have identified 94 cases of the disease this year alone. They are worried with students returning to classrooms they could see those numbers skyrocket. Health officials are encouraging people who have had contact with infants to get another dose of the vaccination, the News reports.
