Enbridge: Pipeline at Straits of Mackinac needs immediate work

By Eartha Jane Melzer | 09.01.10 | 10:25 am

Enbridge has notified the state of Michigan that it must reinforce the section of pipeline that runs under Straits of Mackinac this month.

In an Aug. 26 letter to the Dept. of Natural Resources and Environment the company said that it will perform visual inspections and build ten or more additional support structures for the 20 inch pipeline that crosses the Straits.

Enbridge wrote, “The proposed work is necessary to provide better overall pipeline integrity and safety. Do nothing or the no-build option alternative presents a future risk to the pipeline. The no build option is not a viable option.”

The pipeline crossing at the Straits was authorized by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1953. As noted previously, a leak there would be far more damaging than the one in Calhoun county because the oil would flow directly into the Great Lakes. The cleanup process would also be made more difficult by overlapping international jurisdictions.
