State Rep. Kate Segal (D-Battle Creek) issued a statement Tuesday slamming Hallmark Industrial for allegedly employing undocumented workers for the oil spill clean up in Calhoun County.
Michigan Messenger broke the story about the undocumented workers Monday. In that story, Messenger also documented conditions at various work sites the undocumented workers were working at. Those photographs showed “safety concerns,” according to Enbridge spokeswoman Terri Larson.
By Monday night, Enbridge contractor Garner Environmental Services Inc. terminated its contract with Hallmark Industrial.
Here’s what Segal had to say about the situation:
The recent report that Hallmark Industrial – a subcontractor of Enbridge – has been busing in undocumented workers from Texas is simply outrageous. Enbridge must remain deeply involved in recovery efforts and know who is conducting business on their behalf – whether it’s a contractor, subcontractor, or any other group of people employed by them.
No company should hire undocumented workers, period. I have been asking Enbridge – since day one – to hire local workers to help fix the problem they created. These jobs need to go to people right here in Calhoun County.
Segal’s condemnation echoes letters sent by U.S. Congressman Mark Schauer (D-Bedford Township) to Lisa Jackson, Environmental Protection Agency Administrator, and Hilda Solis, U.S. Secretary for Labor. Those letters called for federal investigations into the allegations of undocumented workers and safety violations.
