Schauer calls on federal agencies to investigate Hallmark Industrial

By Todd A. Heywood | 08.31.10 | 2:21 pm

Congressman Mark Schauer (D-Bedford Township) Tuesday called for investigations into allegations that Hallmark Industrial hired undocumented workers for clean up jobs on the oil spill in Calhoun County. The call came in letters to the Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lisa Jackson and Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis.

A Michigan Messenger investigation over the weekend uncovered the allegations against the company. During the investigation, Michigan Messenger found undocumented workers from Honduras and Mexico, and was provided with photographs of work sites which Enbridge officials said showed safety concerns. On Monday night, Enbridge Energy Partner’s contractor, Garner Environmental Services Inc., ended its contract with Hallmark Industrial LLC. The company has since cleared out, taking all its contract employees with it.

In letters released by Schauer’s office, the Congressman calls on the Department of Labor, the Occupational Health and Safety Administration, the Environmental Protection Agency and Immigration and Customs Enforcement Bureau to investigate.

In the letters Schauer asks the investigation scope include whether or not Enbridge “turned a blind eye.”
