House approves shift in school funds

By Ed Brayton | 08.26.10 | 8:05 am

The Michigan House of Representatives on Wednesday approved a plan proposed by Gov. Jennifer Granholm to shift $208 million from the School Aid Fund to the General Fund.

The two main budget funds in the state have different revenue streams and this year the School Aid Fund had higher revenues than expected while the General Fund had lower revenues. Granholm proposed the idea of shifting the school surplus over to the general fund to balance the 2010 budget without having to make additional cuts or raise new revenues. The state Senate did not vote on the measure as it is adjourned until Sept. 7.
