Term-limited Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land, a longtime Republican activist and former Kent County Clerk, has endorsed state Sen. Cameron Brown (R-Sturgis) to be her successor, stating that he would bring dignity and respect to the office.

The Detroit Free Press reports that Land’s endorsement could give Brown a leg up against State Sen. Michelle McManus (R-Lake Leelanau), Oakland County Clerk Ruth Johnson, Calhoun County Clerk Anne Norlander and Rep. Paul Scott (R-Grand Blanc).

“Throughout his career, Cameron has demonstrated time and again the ability to collaborate and serve with diverse groups of people,” Land said in her statement. “In addition, I am convinced that Cameron’s strong ethics and commitment to preserving our democracy will ensure that elections continue to be administered fairly and accurately.”

The delegates to the state Republican convention will select a candidate for Secretary of State on Saturday. That candidate will face off against Democrat and Wayne State University law professor Jocelyn Benson in the general election.
