Ivan Nikolov, the undocumented youth featured on Monday’s Michigan Messenger, is being released rather than deported. Activists say Nikolov will be released sometime in the next 24 hours and are planning a press conference in front of Sen. Carl Levin’s Detroit offices Tuesday morning.
Nikolov has been held in the Calhoun County jail since May on immigration charges. He was brought to the U.S. by his mother when he was 11, but due to a missed court date, became a fugitive. He and his mother were arrested on May 5 in their Roseville home. His mother has already been sent back to Russia, but pressure from activists and politicians delayed his deportation.
Nikolov is engaged to be married to his fiancee of three years. If the U.S. Congress were to pass the DREAM Act, Nikolov would qualify for a path to citizenship by attending at least two years of higher education or two years of military service.
