Ahlam Mohsen, the anti-war activist accused of hitting senate Armed Services Committee chairman Carl Levin in the face with a Dutch apple pie during a constituents meeting in Big Rapids on Monday, has been charged with felony stalking and assault and remains in the Mecosta County jail where she is being held on a $250,000 bond.
The Detroit News reports that activists with the Michigan Emergency Committee Against War & Injustice planned a rally outside Sen. Carl Levin’s Detroit office this afternoon to demand her release.
Moshen, who is a student at Michigan State University, reportedly threw the pie at Levin after her friend and fellow protestor Max Kantar read a statement condemning Levin for his support for Israel and accusing Levin and other senators of war crimes.
“Carl Levin is one of the most respected senators in Congress,” Mohsen reportedly told The Big Rapids Pioneer after throwing the pie, “People tend to blame the war on Republicans, but we wanted to target Levin today to send a message that liberals and Democrats are just as implicated in the violence as the Republicans.”
In a statement Levin said that he was not hurt in the incident.
[A]t the end of a great meeting this morning, two young people took advantage of the gathering to read a long statement accusing senators of war crimes, and one of the young people threw a pie in my face. They didn’t hurt me, but they hurt their cause even more than their own extreme words had already done.
