Benson releases pre-election fundraising numbers

By Ed Brayton | 08.18.10 | 1:17 pm

The Jocelyn Benson campaign for Secretary of State released their fundraising numbers this morning for the period leading up to the general election. The campaign raised $540,000 from 2,000 individual donors and has $410,000 in cash on hand. A press release from the campaign said:

“I am honored and humbled that more than 2,000 individual donors have invested in our campaign to elect a Secretary of State who will put people first,” Benson said on Wednesday. “Their investment sends a clear message that they want to see leadership in Lansing that works for them, not for powerful special interests,” said Benson.

“My campaign for Secretary of State is about standing up for hard working families and ensuring that our elected officials work for them and no one else,” said Benson. “Large corporations and foreign interests have too much influence in elections and on elected officials. As Secretary of State I will advocate for stronger campaign finance laws to ensure our elections process remains in the hands of Michigan citizens,” she said.

“Today, I’m renewing my call for all of the GOP candidates for Secretary of State to agree to support the campaign finance reform legislation still waiting for a hearing in the State Senate. If these candidates want to protect the sanctity of our democratic process, they should all “just say yes” to this pledge during their debate tonight in Oakland County.”

By comparison with the Republican SoS candidates: State Sen. Michelle McManus’ latest campaign finance filing shows that she has raised $197,000 so far and has $58,000 cash on hand. State Sen. Cameron Brown has raised $228,000 and has $120,000 cash on hand. Ruth Johnson has raised $174,000 and has $148,000 cash on hand. Anne Norlander has raised $224,000 and has $110,000 cash on hand. And Rep. Paul Scott has raised $103,000 and has $43,000 cash on hand.

I am really curious to see who wins on the GOP side, as Jocelyn is such a great candidate that the primary losers should be happy to not have to face her.
