In June, former Detroit City Councilwoman Monica Conyers requested and received a delay in the start of sentence in prison until Sept. 10 so she could be there for an unnamed relative facing surgery. The judge has now denied her request for a second delay and ordered her to report to prison on that date. The Detroit News reports:
A federal judge has denied Monica Conyers’ attempt to stay out of prison as she appeals her conviction, saying the former Detroit city councilwoman must report to federal prison on Sept. 10.
U.S. District Judge Avern Cohn ruled on Tuesday that Conyers must begin her 37-month prison term as scheduled. She was sentenced in March after pleading guilty in June 2009 to taking at least $6,000 in cash bribes in connection with her deciding vote for the $1.2 billion Synagro Technologies Inc. sewage sludge contract in 2007.
Conyers is asking the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals to allow her to withdraw her guilty plea to those charges, something that is highly unusual and highly unlikely.
