As the state board of canvassers prepare to certify the results of the 1st Congressional District Republican primary today it appears that Crystal Falls surgeon Dan Benishek’s margin of victory over State Sen. Jason Allen (R-Alanson) has expanded from one to 15 votes.
The 31 county boards of canvassers in Dist. 1 finalized their vote totals on Thursday, the Traverse City Record Eagle reports, and Allen will have until Monday to decide whether to request a recount after the vote totals are certified today.
“Over the next 48 hours we’ll be sitting down and reviewing all of the options we have to us, from asking for a recount, to a partial recount, to doing nothing,” said Allen, who moved from Traverse City to Alanson to run for Congress. “We’ll make a decision based on our statistical analysis of the votes.”
Both candidates agreed the longer the process takes, the bigger the disadvantage to the eventual winner.
“Anything that takes away focus from the general (election) is bad,” Benishek said. “You only have about 90 days to the general election. It’s … time and money wasted on a recount, where we could instead be campaigning.”
Benishek was the first Republican to enter the race for the Dist. 1 Congressional seat that has been held by Bart Stupak of Menominee since 1993. He toured the regions Tea Party events as part of his campaign and presents himself as a political outsider.
Allen, who is term limited in the state Senate, moved into Dist. 1 in April immediately before declaring his candidacy.
