EPA demands Enbridge produce documents

By Todd A. Heywood | 08.04.10 | 3:51 pm

MARSHALL — Susan Hedman, Environmental Protection Agency Region 5 director, announced that the government agency has submitted a a request to Enbridge Energy Partners to produce documents related to the July oil spill in Calhoun county.

Hedman said the request was made “pursuant to our authority in… the Clean Water Act.”

The request includes documents leading up to the spill, the response and activities to prevent such a spill from happening. On Sunday, Hedman announced for the first time that it was also conducting an investigation. The request for documents would be part of the investigation.

“One relevant issue is whether the company was negligent,” said Hedman as to why the agency was seeking the documents.

Sometime over the weekend of July 24, Enbridge’s Lakehead pipeline 6B burst, dumping an estimated one million gallons of oil into the Talmadge Creek and the Kalamazoo River.
