This is part of a shift in strategy, towards new forms [...]

McCain’s Straight Talk Express mired in the mud of falsehoods

By Todd A. Heywood | 09.09.08 | 3:44 pm

Remember Sen. John Kerry’s ill-fated phrase “I was for it before I was against it?” That flip-flop opened the floodgates from late-night comedians and more important, allowed Karl Rove and his minions to lash out at Kerry during the campaign.

Well, now it seems John McCain’s running mate is in a similar situation.

The good governor of Alaska, Sarah Palin, has proudly proclaimed that she told Washington “thanks but no thanks” on money to the so-called “bridge to nowhere.” A name, incidentally, given to the project by John McCain. Well, Gov. Palin is in some hot water on this issue and McCain’s Straight Talk Express appears to be flooding out in the truth department.

According to lots of sources, Palin was in favor of the ill-fated pork barrel project until it was clear Congress had killed the earmarks, then she became a fervent opponent of the pork.

Here is just one source, the Congressional Quarterly and St. Petersburg Times cooperative piece Politfact:

“McCain said Palin has ‘stopped government from wasting taxpayers’ money on things they don’t want or need. And when we in Congress decided to build a bridge in Alaska to nowhere for $233 million of yours, she said, we don’t want it. If we need it, we’ll build our own in Alaska. She’s the one that stood up to them.’ Never mind that Alaska didn’t give the money back. It spent the money on other transportation projects. The context of Palin’s and McCain’s recent statements suggest Palin flagged the so-called Bridge to Nowhere project as wasteful spending. But that’s not the tune she was singing when she was running for governor, particularly not when she was standing before the Ketchikan Chamber of Commerce asking for their vote. And so, we rate Palin’s position a Full Flop.”

But the truth of the matter is not stopping Mr. Straight Talk Himself from blathering on about Palin’s opposition to the pork.

Currently, the McCain/Palin ticket is running a commercial that claims “She stopped the bridge to nowhere.”

Um, sure, she did …

Meanwhile in reality land, the Obama camp has issued the following snarky comment about this claim.

“On the same day that dozens of news organizations have exposed Governor Palin’s phony Bridge to Nowhere claim as a ‘naked lie,’ she and John McCain continue to repeat the claim in their stump speeches. Maybe tomorrow she’ll tell us she sold it on eBay,” said Obama campaign spokesman Tommy Vietor.

I know, I know. Damn liberal media elites. The truth has nothing to do with politics. How dare we bring the truth into this debate!

The more the media look into Palin the more Mcain's choice of her as VP will be seen as being at best a dangerous gamble and at worst a craven submission to the right wing of the party.

This is a woman would not allow a raped 12 year old to have an abortion. She wants Creationism taught in schools and enquired about the possibility of banning books on evolution. This my friends is not change. This is an even more extreme verson of Bush/Cheney, at least Bush would consider allowing abortions in life threatening and incest cases.

Oh and by the way being in charge of the Alaskan National Guard is not in anyway the same as being C-I-C of the US armed forces in two thetares of war – can we stop this nonsense now. Also the fact that Alaska is close to Russia is an example of foreign policy experience ? This is not only ludicrous but demonstrates just how vapid and hollow a person this VP nominee is and to think she'll be a heartbeat away form the top job.

Why do the American people permit the GOP to look into our eyes and lie?
    Remember?

    1. We have to send our sons and daughters, mothers and fathers to die looking for weapons of mass destruction.
    2. Sedam Hussein was responsible for 9-11.
    3. Iraqi oil will pay for the war.
    4. Mission accomplished.
    5. Our economy is basically strong.
    6. We are fundamentally better off during the bush administration.
    7. The John McCain campaign statement that he is not able to use a computer because of his suffering as a prisoner of war. Now here is my problem with that scenario.
    a. On July 13, 2008 in a New York Times interview john McCain said: “I am learning to get online myself, and I will have that down fairly soon, getting on myself. I don’t expect to be a great communicator, I don’t expect to set up my own blog, but I am becoming computer literate to the point where I can get the information that I need.”

    b. I watched the Rachel Ray program where John McCain whipped up a nice batch of ribs.
I would like a medical opinion on what different muscles are used to barbecue ribs that you would have to use on a keyboard.

Why does no one have the nerve to look in their eyes – not blink – and say “Stop lying to us?”
