Remember Sen. John Kerry’s ill-fated phrase “I was for it before I was against it?” That flip-flop opened the floodgates from late-night comedians and more important, allowed Karl Rove and his minions to lash out at Kerry during the campaign.
Well, now it seems John McCain’s running mate is in a similar situation.
The good governor of Alaska, Sarah Palin, has proudly proclaimed that she told Washington “thanks but no thanks” on money to the so-called “bridge to nowhere.” A name, incidentally, given to the project by John McCain. Well, Gov. Palin is in some hot water on this issue and McCain’s Straight Talk Express appears to be flooding out in the truth department.
According to lots of sources, Palin was in favor of the ill-fated pork barrel project until it was clear Congress had killed the earmarks, then she became a fervent opponent of the pork.
Here is just one source, the Congressional Quarterly and St. Petersburg Times cooperative piece Politfact:
“McCain said Palin has ‘stopped government from wasting taxpayers’ money on things they don’t want or need. And when we in Congress decided to build a bridge in Alaska to nowhere for $233 million of yours, she said, we don’t want it. If we need it, we’ll build our own in Alaska. She’s the one that stood up to them.’ Never mind that Alaska didn’t give the money back. It spent the money on other transportation projects. The context of Palin’s and McCain’s recent statements suggest Palin flagged the so-called Bridge to Nowhere project as wasteful spending. But that’s not the tune she was singing when she was running for governor, particularly not when she was standing before the Ketchikan Chamber of Commerce asking for their vote. And so, we rate Palin’s position a Full Flop.”
But the truth of the matter is not stopping Mr. Straight Talk Himself from blathering on about Palin’s opposition to the pork.
Currently, the McCain/Palin ticket is running a commercial that claims “She stopped the bridge to nowhere.”
Um, sure, she did …
Meanwhile in reality land, the Obama camp has issued the following snarky comment about this claim.
“On the same day that dozens of news organizations have exposed Governor Palin’s phony Bridge to Nowhere claim as a ‘naked lie,’ she and John McCain continue to repeat the claim in their stump speeches. Maybe tomorrow she’ll tell us she sold it on eBay,” said Obama campaign spokesman Tommy Vietor.
I know, I know. Damn liberal media elites. The truth has nothing to do with politics. How dare we bring the truth into this debate!
