Despite evidence of the impact of mercury on children and public health, Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette last month joined with 24 other state attorneys general in filing a lawsuit to scuttle new EPA regulations that would reduce mercury emissions from power plants.

Benishek leads by one vote, Allen declares victory

With all of the precincts reporting, the Secretary of State’s unofficial vote total shows Iron River physician Dan Benishek winning the District 1 primary by just one vote.

Despite the closeness of the race, State Sen. Jason Allen (R-Alanson) declared victory last night, claiming that he “won the election outright.” A recount is expected.

Benishek is considered a political outsider in the race to replace Bart Stupak and was the first Republican to join the race. He raised more than $400,000, much of it while campaigning against federal health care reform. Allen, who is term limited in the state senate, moved from Traverse City to Alanson to be within the boundaries of the district.
