Standish prison promoted as new federal facility

By Ed Brayton | 08.03.10 | 8:23 am

Long after the controversy over moving detainees from Guantanamo Bay to Michigan has blown over, Rep. Bart Stupak and Gov. Jennifer Granholm are working to get the federal government to reopen the Standish prison as a federal facility under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Bureau of Prisons. The Bay City Times reports:

On Monday, Aug. 2, at the request of U.S. Rep. Bart Stupak, D-Menominee, Gov. Jennifer Granholm and the Michigan Department of Corrections Director Patricia L. Caruso, officials from the U.S. Bureau of Prisons will travel to Standish the week of Aug. 16 to tour the prison that was not selected to keep Gitmo detainees.

Officials from the BOP will see the possibility of converting the prison into a federal facility.

According to a release from Stupak’s office, BOP officials were impressed with the quality and safety record of the Standish prison following their Aug. 2009 tour.

The prison closed October 31 last year, dealing a terrible blow to the local economy and community. Federal prisons are vastly overcrowded and new facilities are needed to relieve that problem.
