Jack Hoogendyk, the primary Republican challenger to Rep. Fred Upton (R-St. Joseph), is crying foul over a post card mailed to the district.
According to a statement issued by Hoogendyk’s campaign, the postcard claimed Hoogendyk had been endorsed by the Klu Klux Klan and was mailed with a fake return address to a city that does not exist in Arizona. The campaign issued the following statement:
“We are disappointed that opponents of Mr. Hoogendyk are so desperate to smear his reputation and his campaign that they would embrace such tactics. This is a perfect example of the Chicago-style politics that are corrupting our political system. Mr. Hoogendyk would never have sought such an endorsement, and utterly rejects the mission of the KKK. It is suspicious, at best, that such a mailing should be sent to Republican voters the day before a hotly contested primary election. The fact that the postcard contains a false return address for a city that does not exist further discredits its claims.”
No word yet from the Upton campaign but there is no evidence that they were behind the last-minute dirty trick.
