EPA conducting investigation of oil spill

MARSHALL — Enbridge Energy can add another agency to the growing list of entities investigating the more than one million gallon oil spill into the Talmadge Creek and Kalamazoo River.

EPA Region 5 Administrator Susan Hedman announced Sunday the EPA is conducting its own investigation into the cause of the spill.

“EPA has jurisdiction over the spill and has an ongoing investigation,” Hedman said.

This is the first time EPA has announced it has an ongoing investigation. It formally took over operation and direction of the clean up from Enbridge on Wednesday.

An official from Enbridge upon hearing the announcement said the investigation was “news to me.”

This means the company is facing hearings in Congress, a National Transportation Safety Board investigation, an investigation by the Michigan Attorney General’s office, and the federal Department of Transportation Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration.
